Mothers’ Union in Lanzarote

The Mothers’ Union Branch in Lanzarote was started in November 2001.

Our meetings take place in members’ homes and follow the theme for the year set by Mary Sumner House. The meetings are mostly amongst ourselves with help from various Chaplaincy members we can call on to lead us. We are always delighted when a visitor to the island offers to speak to us. Prayer is a big part of our meetings with members reading form the Bible and sometimes their own prayers for a special occasion.

We take seriously our part in Action and Outreach with many different ways of doing this. A very popular one is inviting visitors to a Fish and Chip lunch when we have a speaker and are able to promote Mothers’ Union to people who may know nothing about the organisation. Another is giving “Goodie Bags” to young people living with cancer who come to the island for a respite holiday.

We have fundraising events to support the Literacy Fund of which we are always happy to do. Make A Mothers Day is another we love to take part in.

For a small branch we support as many of the projects we can.

MU Quiet Day at Nazaret, November 2009

Once a year we hold a Quiet Day in Catholic Retreat House, this is usually led by our Chaplain and Reader.

Everything we do is successful to one degree or another and our meetings are never dull. Our vision is to go on doing the things we do even better, welcoming visitors and possibly new members.

We have a happy caring branch of which as Leader I am very proud.
